The Swine Health Information Center is partnered with the National Pork Board, the National Pork Producers Council and the American Association of Swine Veterinarians and collaborates with the veterinarians, pork producers and university researchers nationally and internationally to monitor swine health both domestically and internationally focussing on emerging diseases.

SHIC Executive Director Dr. Paul Sundberg, who has announced he will be retiring at the end of this year, says the search for a new Associate Director to replace Dr. Megan Niederwerder when she moves into the position of Executive Director is underway.

“We’re certainly interested in a variety of people that might have interest in this and hope we have a good applicant pool”

“Dr. Niederwerder will take over as Executive director on the first of January. In the meantime, we are soliciting applications for a new Associate Director.

“Dr. Niederwerder has been Associate Director since April of last year and we are advertising now for a new Associate Director to work with her as she has worked with me.

“She is gathering those applications and has plans for application closure, the review of the applications and interviews to happen hopefully, all of that process done, by the first of December.

“If people are interested in looking at the application process and the position description that we’ve advertised, it’s on the swinehealth.org web site.

“We’re certainly interested in a variety of people that might have interest in this and hope we have a good applicant pool.

Dr. Sundberg notes the objectives of the Swine Health Information Center are all outlined in its mission statement and include global disease monitoring, which is both domestic and international, and targeted research to decrease the risk to the U.S. swine herd from emerging diseases.

He says the focus is prevention, preparation, response and recovery from emerging diseases that may come our way.
