Why best-before dates may be causing you to throw out too much food
There are a lot of different labels on food with dates attached, and Canadians’ misunderstanding of them is contributing to food waste, says Jennifer Taylor, a food and nutrition professor at UPEI

Best before, sell by, use by — all those phrases mean different things.
“These are voluntary efforts by manufacturers,” Taylor told Island Morning host Laura Chapin. “It’s usually about taste and quality. It’s not going to poison you.”
About seven per cent of food waste in Canada is from consumers throwing products away prematurely, she said. With the high costs of food these days, that can represent a significant loss of money.
“A best before or use by date does not mean food becomes garbage the very next day”
