Uniburger, a Montreal-based burger joint, has been given the highest honor by an online travel website, beating out 49 other Canadian restaurants for bragging rights to the best burger. Global’s Dan Spector explains what make Uniburger stand out

The top burger joint in Canada is Montreal’s Uniburger, according a new survey.

“It was a huge surprise but it was an honour,” said Younes Bengeloune, owner of Uniburger. “And we’re really happy to have made the list and made the top spot.”

The poll from website Big Seven Travel had three Montreal burgers in the top 10 in the country.

“It shows our hard work and attention for local, sustainable products paid off at the end of the day”

Uniburger prides itself on doing nothing too fancy. They make a traditional fast-food-style burger with quality ingredients.

“We’re more of a pure burger experience,” said Bengeloune. “It’s a straight up, no shi-shi kinda burger.”

The other two Montreal burgers in the top 10 were Burger Royal at number 7, and Burger Bar Crescent at number 10.

“I’m proud. It shows our hard work and attention for local, sustainable products paid off at the end of the day,” said Sami Midani, owner of Burger Royal on St-Laurent Boulevard.

Burger Royal gets its beef from a butcher in Mont-Laurier, Quebec and also puts a strong emphasis on quality, local ingredients. Midani even has a burger tattooed on his leg.

“We love burgers in this city,” said Midani.

“We’ve had some great burger places that came from Montreal, like Dic Anns, that laid the ground work for us to come in and show a different version of our burgers here.”

The owner of Burger Bar on Crescent said his establishment specializes on excessive, over-the-top offerings.

“We’re outside the lines,” said Morris Baker. “We like everything to be exaggerated but in good taste.”

One of their burgers is topped with a full poutine and a fried egg.

“It’s a beautiful accolade,” said Baker. “We’re just happy the customers respond well. We’re really proud of the product and we have a great team.”

Big Seven says they polled their readers, their social media community of 1.5 million people, and a panel of food experts. They say they also factored in online reviews and previous media coverage.

Other Montreal burger restaurants that made the top 50 list include Jukebox, Mister Steer, Chez Tousignant, Le Hachoir and Restaurant Mile-Ex.
