During World Pork Expo, which was held June 4–5 in Des Moines, Iowa, the Alltech Pork Team hosted the Business Seminar, “Fighting for the Future of Agriculture: Everyone’s Role in Shaping the Narrative

The seminar included leaders in the agriculture industry as they discussed the state of animal activism within the pork industry, what that means for everything from immediate impact today to the longevity of the pork business, and why it’s important for consumers and pork producers alike that we continue telling their stories.

Lori Stevermer, past president of the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), hosted the conversation and was joined by Andy Curliss, Vice President of Strategic Engagement at NPPC; Kylee Deniz, Executive Director at Oklahoma Pork Council; and Susanna Elliott, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Alltech. They discussed animal activism within the pork industry, what that means from immediate impact today to the longevity of the pork business, and why it’s important for consumers and pork producers alike to continue telling their stories. The Business Seminar discussion was recorded and is available to view online, Fighting for the Future of Agriculture – Everyone’s Role in Shaping the Narrative.

As pork producers, we’re frequently told the importance of telling our story

During World Pork Expo, Alltech also hosted a special screening of the World Without Cows documentary, that is referenced in the Business Seminar video.

“At first glance, one might think the documentary World Without Cows is primarily focused on those within the dairy and beef industry, however, the film’s message is much broader than that. It’s a global perspective on the value of animals not just as nutrition sources or economic drivers, but as a means of sustainability, both economic and environmental,” said Stevermer. “As pork producers, we’re frequently told the importance of telling our story. Sure, they may be referencing cows in the documentary, but the same principles apply to the pork industry. In World Without Cows, we have someone speaking up for us — just what every farmer wants!”

World Without Cows examines the multifaceted and often surprising ways cattle impact the world. Prompted in part by the prevailing negative — and often unscientific — narrative surrounding cattle, this compelling exploration was led by Michelle Michael and Brandon Whitworth, two journalists who travel the world telling stories about agriculture. They set out on an adventure that took them to more than 40 locations around the world — from the American heartland to Kenya, India, Brazil and beyond — as they sought to answer a seemingly simple question, “Are we better off in a world without cows?”
