Canadian Meat Council 12th Technical Symposium & Meat and Poultry Trade Show

Meat-symposium-800x418

For the first time, the CMC 12th Technical Symposium will be joining the Meat & Poultry Trade show in the Niagara Convention Center this fall in Niagara Falls

Symposium attendees would have the opportunity to participate at the trade show (no extra cost) and our associate members will have preferential access to exhibit during the symposium and/or at the Trade Show (see Trade Show brochure here and program for the trade show on https://meatindustryexpo.ca/)

At the CMC 12th Technical Symposium held on October 24, 2024, Government officials (CFIA, Health Canada, Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC)), speakers and exhibitors will discuss topics related to food safety, our inspection system, innovation, and different aspects of importance for our industry.

“You will have a great mix of information shared with takeaways and see new opportunities with companies supplying goods or services to the industry during the Symposium”

What to expect at the Symposium:

  • PHAC will present the compiled data (brand new) from the last couple of years in terms of pathogens causing food borne illnesses in Canada and you will hear how antimicrobial resistance may affect our industry in the close future. Better to know what the priorities from government will be according to their public health data.
  • I have requested CFIA to present the comparative data between old inspection system (CVS) and new one (SIP) in terms of Inspection reports, training, consistency of the inspection and what are the current challenges and next steps for our inspection system.
  • There are some regulatory changes in the US that seem to come quickly to us, so we will have a speaker coming from the US to explain us how this was produced and what are the current food safety challenges in the US.
  • Members asked for more guidance on the allergen file, so we will have an expert to bring us through the allergen guidance for food manufacturers in Canada.
  • Health Canada is working in a new Canada’s food packaging program review especially related to the use of plastics in our packaging. Remember we used to have a mandatory pre-marketing packaging program dismantled several years ago as it was cumbersome and inefficient, so we want to be close and part of the discussion. Good to see what they will present.
  • Food Safety Education for Consumer initiatives will be presented by Health Canada. We complain that our consumers are unaware about good food safety practices, so let’s listen to Government and see how we could assist them to enhance those initiatives or adopt what would be useful for your business.
  • To keep our industry sustainable, all actions in our plants will need to consider the sustainability aspect. We will hear at the symposium in ONE talk all those condensed initiatives that packers are pursuing with that objective. Waste in meat plants, where we are? Preliminary results from a survey to be presented.
  • You all must deal with employees so for that we will have a specialist to give us those key points important for all of you to boosts retention in a demanding Industry as ours
  • We will have 10 exhibitors presenting in booths or in 15 min-speech about the greatness of their products and services. At the Symposium, you will have a great mix of information shared with takeaways and see new opportunities with companies supplying goods or services to the industry during the Symposium or next days at the Trade Show.

The full program can be found here and see short biographies of speaker here. The Technical Symposium will be followed by a 5-7 Meat & Greet reception where you can connect with colleagues and visit our sponsor’s booths.
