Canada, Japan and nine other Pacific Rim Nations have agreed to participate in the Comprehensive Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership.
Rick Bergmann, the Chair of the Canadian Pork Council, told FarmScape Online that the relationship Canada has had with Japan in the past has been good and it looks like it’s going to be great in the future.
“We’re there to really understand the market place and meet the people that are buying our products”
“We’ve got representatives from across the country that are going to be joining us on this mission,” Bergmann said. “It’ll certainly be a learning time for all of us but we’ll be spending significant time relationship building with not only the Japanese import companies but the retailers as well.”
Representatives from all the provincial pork boards will also be a part of the delegation.
“We’ll be very focused when we get to Japan,” Bergmann stated. “We’re there to really understand the market place and meet the people that are buying our products. There are some very large entities in Japan that are buying on the retail side.”
The delegation will also be attending the World Food-Ex show with Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay.
“There are large supermarket chains that we will be going to see and that will help us to further build the rapport that we have,” Bergmann said.
“As well there are Canadian processors that have offices in Japan and have instituted significant infrastructure.”Bergmann describes the new Comprehensive Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership as a win win for both countries.
